On a sunny spring day in June 2022, my friend Arthur and I sat down along the canal in Vienna and had a conversation about what it means to feel at home in an unfamiliar place.

Arthur’s story of home is a story about how falling in love with a person can make you fall in love with a place. It’s also a story about the love-hate relationships we can have with cities and the places we live in—how the things about these places that get on our nerves can actually make us feel more at home.
